if you dont want to install gnome3 (its unstable), please check howto disable unity and use gnome2
Add the ppa sources of gnome3 for Ubuntu 11.04

select the GNOME 3 desktop at login prompt
- At login screen type your user. You will see at the bottom of the screen some options like this screen shot
- Choose Ubuntu Classic Desktop.
- Login or Restart!
Optionally you can install
sudo apt-get purge gnome-accessibility-themes sudo apt-get install gnome-themes sudo apt-get install gnome-themes-standard sudo apt-get install gnome-themes-extrasplease comment if you have any problem! thanks!
If you have problems try ppa-purge
sudo apt-get install ppa-purge sudo ppa-purge ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3

Hi!
I followed these steps but apparently there is a trouble with the nvidia drivers and freezes the system as soon as you log in. It even doesn't let you log in classic mode.
I could uninstall the driver but it went just fine with unity so i'm trying to revert to the originall settings. I tried to uninstall gnome-shell and reinstall unity but it didn't do the trick... what is there to be done?
thanks in advance
first thanks for the comment.
Sorry if this tutorial cause you problems with your computer.
I had the freeze but after install gnome3 you should restart the computer. If you restarted it just after installing gnome3 and you had the freeze check the logs (use alt-f1 to log a console).
My computer running ubuntu 11.04 with gnome3 uses an intel video adapter.
also try an empty home. create a new user and try to log with it.
the gnome3 logs to check are this:
.xsesion-error
and run the dmesg command
also after some google searching
there are some known problems with nvidia and the offical drivers. did try de Nouveau drivers? this issue is not only for gnome3 its also for ubuntu 10.10 gnome2

I cant get over how bad Unity is. Its like trying to work with windows 95... crap interface and nothing makes sense.
You are not REMOVING unity in this method... just not loading it... how dissapointing is to find articles that say one thing but do other...
anyway, thanks for the content... but i have to give my grain of salt saying something in the hope you improve it
